Motorola has introduced a barcode and RFID scanner combination for use at the point of sale. This innovative device has a dual trigger. The top part is for barcode scanning, and this reader can handle either linear 1D barcodes like UPC or Code 39, as well as 2D bar codes! The lower part of the trigger is for RFID scanning and the item with the RFID tag (like a garment), is placed near the base of the unit. I had the pleasure of trying this out at the RFID Live show in Orlando and it is SLICK! Beautifully designed and functioning perfectly, this barcode/RFID scanner is sure to be a top seller.
In addition to scanning bar codes and reading RFID codes, the unit is programmable to allow it to pick a UPC code out of an embedded EPC code from the RFID chip. In English - if the item has only an RFID code to work with, the scanner will still be able to pick the UPC code out of the RFID chip and pass that through just as it does a bar code - so that a point of sale system can find the item being scanned, properly price it and decrement the inventory.
