Apple announced yesterday that they sold 35 million iPhones and 11 million iPads in the most recent quarter.   That's a total of 46 million Apple bar code capable devices.  Awesome! That these devices are phones, or tablets is immaterial.   They ARE capable of decoding bar codes and that is all that matters.

For 2012 analysts have projected the sale of 600 million smartphones (Apple, Android, etc).    I applaud the success of the companies involved and am just drooling over the potential for the bar code industry!

  Way to go Apple!!

Version 10 of BarTender Software adds Card Printing

Bellevue, WA, USA – Seagull Scientific began shipping BarTender version 10 in March, 2012. Coming 25 years after their first release of BarTender, Seagull claims that version 10 is the most substantial software release in their history.  The new release introduces card printing, professional-level drawing functions and major user-interface improvements, allowing Seagull to expand into markets beyond label design and printing.

“We’ve paid very close attention to the rise of card printing these past few years,” says Jeremy Seigel, Seagull’s CEO. “Because the existing ‘card printing software’ companies were charging so much more for the very same design features BarTender already had, it made great sense for us to develop our own true Windows drivers for card printers as well.  We are truly excited to enter this new market and looking forward to the same great success we’ve long had with label and tag printing.”

BarTender version 10 also includes the following additional new features:

  • Encoding of Smart Cards and Magnetic Stripes
  • Powerful, High-End Drawing
  • RFID Support Now in Professional Edition
  • Brand New Properties Dialog
  • Data Type Support
  • New "Select Barcode" Browser
  • Easier Object Creation
  • Better Text Formatting
  • Improved Graphic Support
  • More Flexible Document Format
  • And more.

A few days ago I wrote an article suggesting we need more variety in the bar code industry.  And, that maybe it was time for bar code readers in a color besides putty, gray or black.   The article was called Fifty Shades of Gray in the Bar Code Industry, and it bitched about the boring bar code readers that we have.  Well, apparently I'm not the only who feels that way.
Last night,  someone I met at RFID Live told me that a company HAS developed a hot pink bar code reader very recently.    (Possibly for use in a Komen-type campaign).   However, it is not going to be produced.   The pink bar code reader was nixed by the Board of Directors of the company that developed it.   I'm hoping to get more info and maybe a picture today.

If you have a picture of this pink bar code reader, or can provide more information, please This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it here.  All information will be kept confidential.
