iPhone: Everybody Has a Scanner!: What happens when every customer walking through the door has their own scanner tied to the world wide web? Applications such as Red Laser and Shop Savvy can be downloaded from the iPhone Apps pages. These applications allow the user to focus his iPhone camera on a bar code and then automatically comparison shop the Internet for best pricing. We tested it on some books in the office and were able to find some great deals. A test of a small box of cookies however

, which cost $1.49 at the local store came up with prices of $3.00 at WalMart and $30 at Ace Hardware. While the system clearly has a ways to go, the iPhone barcode scanner shows great promise to be  a truly disruptive technology.
